Kanha National Park The Land of Tigers
Situated in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park is one of the most beautiful and well managed of all national parks in India. It is well known not only within the tourists, natural history photographers and wildlife lovers but also to public at large. Tourist throng here to see the magnificent big cat Tiger and one of the rarest deer the Hard ground Barasingha (Swamp Deer) also known as the – Jewel of Kanha national park. Many endangered species have indeed been saved here. Today Kanha is among the few most scenic and beautiful wildlife reserves in Asia. This 'Tiger Country' is the ideal home for both predator and prey The present-day Kanha area is divided into two protected areas, Hallon and Banjar, of 250 and 300 km2 (97 and 116 sq mi), respectively. Kanha National Park was created on 1 June 1955 and was designated a tiger reserve in 1973. Today, it encompasses an area of 940 km2 (360 sq mi) in the two districts Mandla and Balaghat. Kanha has 4 core zones (Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, Sarhi) and 4 Buffer Zones (Khapa, Khatia, Phen, Sijora).
Together with a surrounding buffer zone of 1,067 km2 (412 sq mi) and the neighbouring 110 km2 (42 sq mi) Phen Sanctuary, it forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve, which is one of the biggest in the country. This makes it the largest national park in central India. Kanha best known for its evergreen Sal forests, is home to about 300 species of Birds, 43 species of Mammals, 26 species of Reptiles and more than 500 species of Insects. The Major species found are hard ground Barasingha, Tiger, Leopard, Dhole, Bear, Gaur and Indian Python etc.
The State animal of Madhya Pradesh - Hard Ground Barasingha is found exclusively in Kanha Tiger Reserve. Through holistic conservation approach and effective management practices, the Tiger Reserve has seen rise in population of this symbolic deer species which was once on the verge of extinction from the Earth. The lush green forests of Kanha, composed majorly of Sal (Shorea Robusta) and other mixed forest trees, supports the growth of rich and varied flora and fauna.

Weather-wise, the best time to visit the Kanha National Park is in the winter season, that is from the mid of October to February. March and April also make for good time to visit the park since the climate is still tolerable during that time and the morning safaris are quite enjoyable then. May and June very hot but are considered as the best time for Tiger sightings as most of the streams and water holes in the jungles get dried and the chances of spotting the majestic beautiful big cat near a few bigger perennial water bodies become higher.
Entry Gates
Kanha Tiger Reserve has eight Zones divided in four core zones and four buffer areas. Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi are the four core zones and Khatia, Khapa, Sijhora and Phen Sanctuary are the buffer areas. There are three entry gates that for the core and buffer zones for Kanha Tiger Reserve and there are several resorts and hotels close to the gates.

The Nearest Railway Stations for accessing Kanha National Park is Gondia & Jabalpur. Gondia railway station is 145kms / 03:00 hrs drive from Kanha (Khatia Entrance Gate). Jabalpur railway station is 160kms / 04:00 hrs drive from Kanha (Mukki Entrance Gate).
